Bank Healthcare Assistant – Opportunity in Palliative and End of Life Care
This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated and caring individual to join our supportive Bank team as a Healthcare Assistant at St Luke’s Hospice. You will work flexibly as part of our dedicated clinical team, ensuring the delivery of outstanding person-centred care in a variety of settings, including in-patient units, day services, and community-based care, aligned with our values and mission.
Main Duties and Responsibilities: Healthcare Support in Palliative Care
- Provide safe, sensitive, and high-quality care and support to patients with life-limiting conditions, respecting individual choices, dignity, and diversity at all times.
- Assist qualified professionals in delivering clinical interventions, including personal care, mobility support, and administration of meals and hydration as required.
- Monitor and accurately document observations and changes in patient wellbeing, sharing relevant information with the wider care team promptly and appropriately.
- Promote patient independence and comfort by responding promptly to requests, encouraging participation in activities, and supporting family visits and communication.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment, following all infection prevention, health, and safety guidelines.
- Participate in handovers and care planning, ensuring individualised, holistic care is provided for each patient.
- Uphold confidentiality, respect, and compassion when communicating with patients, relatives, and colleagues.
- Engage in mandatory training, supervision, and reflective practice, demonstrating a commitment to personal and professional development.
- Represent the values of St Luke’s Hospice and contribute positively to the collaborative, multidisciplinary team culture.
Salary, Contract, and Working Pattern for Bank HCA Roles
Salary: £12.75 per hour
Contract: Bank (zero hours), flexible shifts including days, nights, weekends, and public holidays
Location: Based at either Basildon Hospice or Thurrock Hospice.
Essential Requirements – Skills and Experience for Healthcare Assistants
- Experience of providing care or support within a health, social care, or community setting (this may include personal, voluntary, or paid roles).
- Genuine empathy for individuals nearing end of life and a commitment to upholding dignity and choice for patients and their families.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, sensitive to the needs of people from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work effectively in a flexible rota, contributing positively to a team-based environment.
- Basic IT and record keeping skills, with an understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Willingness to undertake mandatory and ongoing training as required.
Desirable Criteria – Skills and Qualities for Bank Healthcare Assistants
- Care Certificate, NVQ Level 2 (or higher) in Health and Social Care, or equivalent qualification.
- Experience working in palliative care, end of life, or hospice environments.
- Understanding of infection prevention, manual handling, and safeguarding practices.
- Ability to adapt to different care roles and settings within the hospice and community.

Our care considers people’s medical, spiritual and emotional needs, including support for loved ones and carers. Anyone living in Basildon and Thurrock can call on us 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Working alongside other healthcare providers, our specialist services are available at the hospice, out in the community or in a person’s place of residence. Together, we fulfil people’s choices at the end of their life.
We are a charity and the services we provide are free. We rely on voluntary income from local people to deliver the care they deserve.
